Five Outdoor Activities to Try This Winter

The holiday season brings great opportunities for play! When they’re done exploring the snow on screen, why not bundle up and head out into your own winter wonderland? Here are five great winter activities for you and your toddler to explore!

Go Stargazing: Is there anything that inspires wonder quite like looking up at the stars? The winter months bring new constellations to discover and endless opportunities for conversation. So make a hot cocoa or apple cider to keep you both warm, bundle up and get gazing!

Go on a Nature Walk: Winter can be a great time to explore your local parks. There’s usually less foot traffic than in the spring and summer months, so your toddler can take their time exploring. Plus, they’ll be able to observe nature in an entirely new setting.

Enjoying winter through the eyes of children makes it so much more magical!

Be Mindful: Winter can be a wonderful time to remember the importance of stillness. With all the leaves off the trees and many people staying indoors, winter seems to be even more still and quiet than any other season. Teach your toddler the importance of relaxation and mindfulness by sitting together and observing the world around you. What can you hear? What can you see? Simple observations about the world around you will pepper a pinch of mindful practice into your day.

Create a Nature Collage: Spend some time outside collecting leaves, twigs and pinecones, and create a piece of collage art with glue and crayons. For an added challenge, you can have them draw their own interpretation of your found items next to the real ones!

Build a Snowman: The earlier you get your children building things with their hands, the better. Let their imaginations run wild and create magical beings out of all that fluffy white stuff. You can even get creative with found objects. A pinecone can transform into the perfect nose. That fallen twig? The arm of a mythical snow beast! Imaginations are limitless, so let your toddler take the reins and watch their creativity flow.

Winter, whether it be on a screen or in your own backyard, is full of creative ways to observe and interact with the world around you. As you settle into this holiday season, take the opportunity to simply be together in play. Tell stories while you explore Town, build snow monsters in your backyard and gaze into the heavens. Play is powerful and you’ll be creating lasting memories for both you and your little one.
